Dance is an elegant art form that goes beyond cultures and generations. From beautiful ballet to the power movements of hip-hop, the world of dance is endless and diverse. List of Dance Styles

1. Ballet

One of the most classical forms of dance styles, ballet started in the 15th century during the Italian Renaissance. King Louis XIV founded the first ballet school, the Academie Royale De Danse. As a dance style, ballet is known for it’s grace and technique, often performed to orchestral accompaniment. Ballet is still performed today, with ballet companies such as English National Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet performing classics as Giselle and Swan Lake. 

2. Jazz Dance

Next, in the list of dance styles, is jazz! This dance style originated in the early 20th century in the US, with African and Caribbean influences. It became increasing popular through Broadway musicals and Hollywood films. Jazz dance is characterised by dynamic movements, isolations and rhythms. Jazz continues to evolve incorporating elements from other dance styles like hip-hop and ballet. 

3. Tap Dance

Tap is a rhythmic and percussive form of dance, that developed in the 19th century taking influences from African and Irish step dancing. Tap dancers create rhythm using their dance shoes by striking them on the floor. The metal taps attached the soles of their tap shoes, help create an impressive sound as dancers move their feet in rhythm. This style of dance became popular in Hollywood musicals in the 20th century. Today tap is ever popular with artists such as Jacob Samuel Smith (@jsamsmif) leading the way.  

 

4. Hip-Hop Dance

Hip-hop begun in the 1970’s in the Bronx, New York as part of hip-hop culture which is formed of rap, DJing and graffiti art. It includes various types of dance styles, including breaking, popping and locking. Hip-hop is performed to electronic and rap beats and is an expressive dance style. 

5. Contemporary Dance

As a blend of ballet, modern and jazz technique, the contemporary dance style emerged as a way to break free from the structure of classic ballet to form a new more fluid style, formed in the mid-20th century. It focuses on expressiveness and floorwork. Choreographers such as Marta Graham and Merce Cunningham shaped contemporary dance into what it is today. 6. Ballroom Dance

Today we say ballroom dance and our first thoughts are Strictly! However, ballroom dance originated in Europe and Latin America. This form of dance style consists of partner dances such as the tango, foxtrot and cha-cha. Each ballroom dance style has it’s own steps and cultural influences. Ballroom is performed socially and is competitive with lots of competitions happening throughout the year, the most famous in the Blackpool ballroom. 

7. Latin Dance

Latin dance includes vibrant dance styles such as salsa, samba, rumba, and merengue. These dances originated from Latin American and Caribbean traditions, blending indigenous, African, and European influences. Latin dance is known for its rhythmic hip movements, fast footwork, and passionate energy.

8. Modern Dance

Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham were the pioneers of modern dance, they expressed their emotions through more natural and organic movements. This style of dance, started in the early 20th century as a reaction to the strict rules of ballet. Modern dance has elements of improvisation and storytelling, making it one of the most expressive types of dance styles today. 

9. Musical Theatre Dance

A mix of jazz, ballet and acting, musical theatre dance is seen in Broadway or West End shows and films. Industry leaders Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbin have significantly impacted this genre of dance.
